This a fascinating book that imagines in quite a bit of detail what would actually be involved and the size of the commitment nations would have to make. It also suggests some of the politics that would emerge as the colony started to grow. Mars is full of dangers for human beings and the novel gives us some of those. transition book. First book dealt with the problems of getting off the earth. This one with the initial problems of starting a colony on a new world with many of the problems of the old. Wonder where they go from here?
I recently read "The Earth-Mars Chronicles Volume 2 Home for Humanity" and really enjoyed it. I found the story line very timely and credible. Most people now expect the exploration, colonization and settlement of Mars to be a truly International effort, more like the ISS rather than Apollo. This book provides an account of a how this could happen. It delves into the realities of international relations and politics as well as the relations between individual colonist with diverse cultures and backgrounds. It examines the good and bad of this diversity and how it all plays out on Mars. The colonists are torn between finding a Martian identity or maintaining their earthly identities. This all plays into whether Mars will me controlled by earth or have its own governance. Overall a enjoyable read!
Vol. 2 continues the story, expanding on issues raised in Vol. 1, and shows how we might actually do what people have talked about for a century.
Mr. Driggers brings to bear his extensive background and knowledge from work at NASA and elsewhere and his continuing interest and efforts in eventual support of getting a viable gene pool off planet.
Apart from the inclusion of useful, workable AI - where we appear to be stuck so far - everything here is realistically based on current technologies. The threat, the political, the social issues presented all reflect the very real.
Vol. 2 can stand on its own; it makes for a rousing good tale of how things might go, and how we could do it. Cast and crew are real people and we can readily care about what they do and what happens to them.
I avidly await Vol. 3.
The previous book in this series was set on Earth, while this one is set primarily on Mars. In addition to the interesting aspects of living on Mars depicted in the book, it really highlights the importance of Mars in unique ways. While I don't want to give away significant plot elements, as the book unfold it becomes clear how much governments, interest groups, and even powerful individuals want to control activities on Mars. As the book unfolds the reader sees a rapidly growing community in Mars that grows to thousands of people in a very short time...including kids. It also touches upon the interesting notion of retirement on Mars. This book is well worth you time...but be sure to read Volume 1 first!
After reading Volume 1, which was great, I couldn't wait to read Volume 2. And I wasn't disappointed. Now we finally get to the point where the settlers arrive on Mars. First the Pathfinders arrive, that will prepare the settlement for the first Settlers, and we get to follow them in their work there. But we also get to follow some of the chosen settlers that are being prepared for on Earth. I don't want to spoil the book too much, but if you like stories about the first human exploration and settlement this book series is great. I'm really looking forward to Volume 3!
Gerald Driggers is a new and very promising author. In this book he introduces concepts that are unique in Sci-fi while at the same time staying within the realm of physics. The action picks up greatly in the second halve of the book.
This book was the sequel to "The Earth-Mars Chronicles Hope for Humanity". My main problem with Book 1 was that they never actually made it to mars by the end of the story. Book 2 "Home for Humanity" finally gets up Mars fans were we want to go. The author introduces some new characters and pays homage to the old characters. A good read.
