Poor little RJ has been used and abused by everyone. She hasn't been wanted, needed or cared for since her dad died several years ago. This very vivid, creative book takes you on a journey with RJ and Angel, the two main characters are a quest to collect orbs in an effort to save humanity from Satan himself. You've never seen a battle between good and evil quite like this! This author boldly takes on some controversial issues and handles them with style and grace (well done!), though I won't tell you what those are. You have to read and find out for yourself. As you progress through this journey, you learn of an very interesting plot twist. Then, just as all the orbs are collected, and you're on the edge of your seat, something riveting happens, leaving you wanting that next book! The author does a great job of painting mental images for the reader and inspiring emotional investment in the characters. Very intriguing story with a lot of twists to keep you turning these pages. Ruby (RJ) Schlusser is a sixteen year old girl who is emotionally abused by her family and basically lives a very sad and pathetic life. She's alone, with no one to talk to besides a pesky little bird that keeps following her around.
As the story progresses, it seems RJ can’t catch a break. She’s enslaved to domestic duties at home, abused by her brothers and tormented by bullies at school who apparently have no trouble raping her in a tool shed on campus... How sad that all the adults in her life have failed her. The book does address a lot of awful experiences that most people tend to ignore. It's a bit much at times but is well needed when you learn the reason; the human race has gone wicked, giving Lucifer the strength he needs to enter and rule the world. RJ is destined to fight him, and so the abuse she endures now will prepare her for later battles.
The story reminds me of The Amulet by Alison Pensy. A young girl coming of age discovers that her deceased parent was the last of some supernatural tribe. The duty has now been passed on to her and she is responsible to save the world. If you’re into that kind of story, you should love this!
Really liked this book. It was hard for me to read at first with how the first couple of chapters play out, but it pulled me in and it got harder to put my kindle down. Can't wait for book two!
I read the first 4 chapters non stop until I finally had to stop to let the dog out to pee. Hard book to just walk away from. Had trouble finding a good place to stop. I even cried at one point. Not many books can have that effect on people. Definitely a good read. Can't wait for more books. Talented new author with a promising future.
Poor RJ. It seemed as though she could not get a break. The world she lived in appeared evil. It kind of gave me a feeling of gloom. I do not like to read evil stories, although I know that these things do happen in real life. The story creates a vivid scene in the horrible things that RJ went through.
I absolutely love this book! If you have not read it, you are certainly missing out.
Andrea paints an intricate picture with her main character RJ. You get to see the details of her abusive life before she is thrown into a supernatural adventure complete with angels, demons, gorgeous relationship development, and some awesome kick-ass fighting. Oh, and a sweet little dog! The pace of this novel stays steady, but will throw curve ball after curve ball and leave you wanting more! I couldn't put it down and I cannot WAIT for the next book to come out!
I enjoyed this book. The story is fast paced once it gets going. Can be read in one sitting and i'm looking forward to a sequel to wrap things up. This author is new to me and makes me wish i had more time to give other authors a chance but there are only so many hours in a day. I will be keeping an eye on this author and look forward to more stories from her.

The Key tells the story of RJ (Ruby Schlusser), a girl tormented at home by her brothers, tormented at school by her classmates, and failed by her mother and teachers. She soon finds herself recruited by God himself on a mission to save humanity.
Accompanied by her guardian, Angel, a dog Liam, and the orphan Tommy, the four comes together to prevent Hell from coming to earth. With that said, this book tackles some pretty rough themes (sexual abuse, bullying, trust, same-sex relationships, and religion). So initially, it may make some readers uncomfortable, but it does drive the plot towards the end of the book.
RJ is a relatable character because she sums up a lot of our characteristics (doubtful, angry, and just wants to be loved). But more interesting than that to me was how God chose someone (who was initially reluctant) to do his work.
Similar to Moses, Abraham, and Noah in the Bible.
I've always felt that a "good book" will change your thinking. Me personally, I was never an advocate same sex couple, until reading this book. Seeing two women who suffered REAL abuse finding love with each other was more than just beautiful - it was poetic.
This book is also a short read as well, which is great for people on the go. For those of you who find yourself with a little time each day, I HIGHLY recommend you support an author and read this book.
